Ladies and gentlemen, the Tour de France is back, and if you want to see the likes of Mark Cavendish and André Greipel up close, here’s the hotel that’ll put you in the front seat… if you’re willing to make the trip to a lakeside town in the Alps that is.
The Tour de France takes place in some of France’s most beautiful regions and none more so, than the medieval town of Talloires.
Framed by the Alps and right on the shores of the crystalline waters of the Lake Annecy (Europe’s purest lake) Talloires, is a popular tourist destination, whether the Tour de France is in town or not.
When it is though, the athletes pass right through Talloires, and if you’re staying at l’Auberge du Père Bise; you’ll be less than 5 minutes away from the action.
Hands down one of the best luxury hotels to be found in the Annecy area, it’s hard not to fall for the charm of L’Auberge du Père Bise. The second I sat down on its lakeside terrace and sunk my fork into a warm crayfish gratin, I was smitten… really, if that gratin isn’t served in heaven, I want nothing to do with the place. Send me to Chef Sophie Bise’s table instead.
Opened in 1901 and owned by the same family ever since, the hotel is renowned for its lip smacking cuisine.
The restaurant is the first French table to earn a Michelin Star, and Head Chef Sophie Bise carries the torch by using ingredients from the Lake Annecy and surrounding mountains as her father and grandfather did.
Every morning, fishermen deliver turbot, crayfish and fera to the hotel’s kitchens and the farmer’s market supplies the apricots, rabbit, cheeses and truffle which you’ll find on the seasonal menu. A Michelin star cooking with soul, best enjoyed Alfresco on the lake side terrace and accompanied with a vintage red from the hotel’s well stocked cellar.
With only 23 rooms and suites, this intimate and traditional hotel is the ideal place to experience slow living in the French countryside… not an idea that mixes with the crowds of the Tour de France.
If you’re worried about Talloires becoming a tourist trap during the Tour de France, you’ll be happy to know that L’Auberge du Père Bise is separated from the town’s main roads. So all you’ll be seeing out your window, is the beautiful Lake Annecy and the lush foothills of the Alps.
The Tour de France will be passing right through the town of Talloires on Friday the 22nd of July 2016 for its 19th stage.
If you want to be in a prime position to catch the Peloton, you won’t find a better place than L’Auberge du Père Bise to do so… you can even squeeze in a pedalo ride on the lake and an aperitif before the day ends. For cycling fans, it doesn’t get much better than this.
